How to maximise the life of your vehicle

Accelerate slowly – Learn to accelerate smoothly and gently, working up through the gears to your intended speed. Putting strain on the transmission by going from a standstill to high revs/speed demon is a good way to ruin your engine in the long run!

Drive less – Try and only use your car when absolutely necessary and avoid lots of stops and starts. Basically try and consolidate trips. To put it simply, your engine will work harder the more cold starts you put your car through on a daily basis. So give your car a break, perhaps walk to your corner shop?

Give your brakes a brake – Remember, manual transmissions can be down-shifted, this will use the engine to slow the car. Going straight from accelerating to braking puts a lot of wear on your brake pads, so where possible, anticipate your coming to a stop and start to decelerate using downshift!

Smoothly does it! –  Changing gears can be tough on your transmission – especially when you accidentally grind the gears, or rev the RPMs too much. Practice shifting as smoothly as possible, especially in the lower gears.
