Picking a Garage for a Service

Posted on May 23, 2018 at 8:25 pm

Many car garages offer services, but are these the right ones for your vehicle? What is the best way to find the right one? Luckily, most garages that offer services will offer good ones, and you will be able to rely on them to do what you require. Whilst a service isn’t a legal requirement, it is an important part of car maintenance and garages won’t be able to offer a service if they don’t have the right skills to carry it out.

If you are looking for a quality service, you don’t necessarily need to look for the most expensive one. Have a look at reviews for the servicing centres you are considering and see whether other car owners have been happy with the outcome. If the garage has a good reputation, it will be apparent. If it makes you more comfortable, take your car to a garage that is approved for its make.

Does your Car Need a Service?

Posted on March 18, 2018 at 11:44 am

Perhaps surprisingly, it is not a legal requirement to get your car serviced (though it is a legal requirement to have an MOT). This means that it is up to you whether it is something you do. There are pros and cons either way. Here are some things to think about:

  • You can sell cars for more money with a full service history
  • It might make you aware of future problems so you can start planning for them
  • It can be expensive, so search around for a good deal
  • It’s reassuring to know that your car is in good condition

If you do get your car serviced, remember when the last service was and keep going regularly. Some cars have a service light on the dashboard that will light up when a service is due. Remember that if you have a car on finance, it may be in your terms and conditions that it needs to be serviced.

A Full Service History – How Important is it?

Posted on November 27, 2017 at 7:53 pm

A service is not a legal obligation for a vehicle owner. It is something that is highly recommended, but it is not something that is absolutely necessary. Whilst it is recommended that you have you care serviced for your safety and comfort, it is in no way something that you have to do.

How important is it to have a full service history? It is important for your safety whilst you own the car because a service will point out issues that an MOT wouldn’t pick up. For example, it may alert you to the fact that you need an oil change.

You should also check your obligations if you have purchased your car on a PCP finance deal. You will not own the car at the end of the contract so if you are going to give it back, they may require you to have a full-service history, and you might even have to go to an approved garage.

Cleaning Your Car’s Exhaust… Dirty Job, Clean Results

Posted on August 18, 2016 at 6:20 pm

Maintaining your car is extremely important. Everyone thinks about the exterior, wheels, engine but we guarantee you will overlook the exhaust tip! Polishing the tips will not only complete the look of your car, but will also protect it from corrosion and other forms of build up.

When cleaning the exhaust tip, we recommend using a degreaser and a metal polish. To start off, soak the tips with the degreaser and let the chemicals work its magic. Use a cleaning brush after a few minutes and start cleaning inside and outside the exhaust tip.

After you’ve dried it off, it’s time to polish the exhaust. For this we recommend you polish using a steel wool for the first polish and then a microfiber cloth for the second.

Lotus Lovers Rejoice

Posted on June 5, 2016 at 6:14 pm

Lotus lovers, this post is for you… It’s been down-sized, shedding 21kg to 931kg all-up, and gains 26bhp from it’s Toyota-sourced, supercharged 1.8-litre engine, yes we are talking about the new Lotus Elise 250 Cup. That means the car has a total of 243bhp and 261bhp/tonne, enough for 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds and the title of fastest purely road-going Elise ever. Note that time is to 60mph mind, rather than the 0-62mph we more commonly see these days – so expect that sprint to take 4.3. Still, it’s a quick thing. Available as a roadster with a hard-top option, there’s also a Carbon Aero Pack which drops a further 10kg, a whopping rear wing and chunky front splitter – Lotus reckons 66kg of downforce at 100mph and 155kg at the 250 Cup’s top speed of 154mph.

How to maximise the life of your vehicle

Posted on December 21, 2015 at 10:15 pm

Accelerate slowly – Learn to accelerate smoothly and gently, working up through the gears to your intended speed. Putting strain on the transmission by going from a standstill to high revs/speed demon is a good way to ruin your engine in the long run!

Drive less – Try and only use your car when absolutely necessary and avoid lots of stops and starts. Basically try and consolidate trips. To put it simply, your engine will work harder the more cold starts you put your car through on a daily basis. So give your car a break, perhaps walk to your corner shop?

Give your brakes a brake – Remember, manual transmissions can be down-shifted, this will use the engine to slow the car. Going straight from accelerating to braking puts a lot of wear on your brake pads, so where possible, anticipate your coming to a stop and start to decelerate using downshift!

Smoothly does it! –  Changing gears can be tough on your transmission – especially when you accidentally grind the gears, or rev the RPMs too much. Practice shifting as smoothly as possible, especially in the lower gears.
