How to Drive in Snow and Ice

At this time of year, the roads can be dangerous places. With so much cold weather, there is a lot of snow and ice around that can prove hazardous for vehicles. If you are worried about driving in snowy and icy conditions, here are some tips for you:

  • Put winter tyres on your car. This will give you a better grip on the roads. You should have at least 3mm of tread in cold weather.
  • Pull off in second gear and ease your foot up off the clutch gradually. This will help you to avoid wheel spin.
  • Carry a sack or piece of material with you. It can be used if you do get stuck – clear snow from under the wheels and put this down to give your tyres some traction.
  • Use a low gear when possible, especially going downhill. Avoid braking hard or suddenly – if you do need to brake, put your foot down gradually.
